The mysterious way in which all of creation unfolds can be summed up most simply with a single word: play.Divinity creates in a way that is vastly abundant and full of whimsy, beauty, and delight. Creation proceeds not methodically and carefully, but explosively, without apparent purpose or reason, generating untold variety out of the stuff of life and matter. The template of creative play modeled by the universe itself calls to us to create in just that same way. These two things—creativity and play—are deeply imbedded in our nature as humans. And they are actually two sides of the same thing.
In this workshop, you will explore your own creative self-expression as play. Any form of creative endeavor is welcome: write a poem, paint a picture, develop a business plan, choreograph a dance, compose a symphony, improvise a song, invent an app.Learn the principles of play and how to apply them to your personal creative expression, and unlock hidden reserves of creative potential. This workshop calls on you to shed your idea of creativity as craft, and create instead as God does, selflessly and with complete abandon.
Online courses are conducted in a virtual classroom hosted by Blackboard Learn, a web-based online learning platform. Each Friday, you’ll get a new lesson that includes focus readings and related exercises to practice with that week. This is a hands-on, risk-based course—the exercises are designed to get you seeing and practicing with the principles of creativity in the world, followed by an opportunity to apply those principles to a personal creative project you work on for the full four weeks. You’ll contribute your explorations and findings to a community forum, a storehouse of ideas, practices, and inspiration we will create together. This course is designed to be accessible to those with any level of artistic or creative experience.
Early registration discount: Register by Friday, November 3, and pay only $65. After that, the course fee is $75.
For returning students: This course is an online version of the God at Play Workshop offered June 2016. If you participated in the one-day workshop, use coupon code RETDISC20 when registering for a 20% discount off the course fee.
Being Art: A Creativity Workshop
Building on the principles presented in the God at Play workshop, Being Art explores living itself as fundamentally an act of creativity. The lived experience of true creativity manifests a life which is free, rich, and expressive, and we come to realize that there is no difference between spiritual practice and living fully. We will investigate emptiness, destruction, sovereignty, and radical risk as fundamental to living our lives in this new, deeply creative way.
Being Art will be offered as a one-day workshop in January/February 2018. Either the God at Play creativity workshop or online course must be taken as a prerequisite for this follow-up.
